The key to data security
Data mishap“ is the nice phrase the media uses whenever strictly confidential data has fallen into the wrong hands because of loss or theft. The number of examples is compelling – such as the British major bank HSBC that lately “lost” a CD with 370.000 customer records in the mail.
However, such a little „mishap“ has considerable financial and legal consequences for the affected companies, banks or authorities. According to a current study by the Ponemon Institute, the economic damage amounts to between 110,000 and five million Euro – depending on the number of data records involved. This is because the publication of such a loss is usually followed by rapidly declining sales. No less severe are the damage to the image and the harm to the mutual trust with customers and suppliers that – according to the study – often lead to an increased customer fluctuation.
Especially when it comes to banks and financial service providers, business partners expect the highest level of security and reliability. „For financial institutes, it is extremely important to protect confidential customer records, account balances and monetary flows sufficiently from unauthorized access and manipulation“, explains Dr. Volker Scheidemann, product manager at the Applied Security GmbH (apsec), a company located in Stockstadt/Main specializing in IT security.
The perfect solution for our documents
For banks, a strong encryption of confidential records is an absolute “must”. Only then will internal information be available exclusively to authorized persons – ands useless to all others. The encryption software fideAS®® file enterprise by the Applied Security (apsec) offers such a reliable protection. Stephan Henkel, CEO of the VÖB Service GmbH, the service branch of the Association of German Public Sector Banks (Bundesverband Öffentlicher Banken, VÖB) puts it like this: „With fideAS® file enterprise”, we are convinced to be using the best solution on the market for the security of our sensitive documents.“
This is why the VÖB Service GmbH is now cooperating with the IT security experts at “apsec”: the current 34 full members and 28 associate members of the Association of German Public Sector Banks (Bundesverband Öffentlicher Banken) have the option of buying “fideAS® file enterprise” at a special price. The VÖB Service GmbH itself has been a satisfied user of the software for quite some time and sees this agreement as a chance for other banks to profit from it, too. Henkel: „We hope that many of our members will follow our example.“
Because the system combines a high level of security with an excellent usability. „Our security solution is user-friendly and easy to integrate into the company network. It protects the entire file system within the company network, on notebooks and on removable storage devices – for example USB flash drives“, as Dr. Volker Scheidemann explains. „In addition to that, files can be automatically converted to encrypted email attachments so that confidential information can be exchanged by email without any security risk“, the expert adds. „Another advantage: the software takes care of highly complex encryption tasks without affecting the performance of the system resources.“ If the company network is equipped with such a security solution, not even a little “data mishap” will lead to a catastrophe for the bank.
